SPECIES
He Jiankui, a Chinese scientist, announced on 26 Nov 2018 that a gene-modified baby would be given birth, which caused hot discussion among the public with both positive and negative views. It reminds me of Hawking’s vision of a future superman. In my opinion, we must focus on the current survival and the future of human beings. Therefore, I would like to study the possibility of gene modification and man’s evolution.
RESEARCH
The study finds man evolves mainly with the evolution of tools. Gene modification and artificial intelligence are the tools that are widely acknowledged. I studied the scientists specializing in such a field and got three stages of human evolution, survival, desire and supermen.
EXPERIMENT
Step 1. For these three stages, I conducted a visual collage attempt. To study the unknown, I decided to find some visual intention for development.
Step 2. I tried with glue and colour to make the shape of a fetus. The shape of glue can be adjusted when it is semi-dry, but the colour is difficult to control, and it is too strong. The final effect is too bloody. I turned to my containers and sculptures, and the colour was replaced by solid material.
Step 3. Exploration of the devices.
DEVELOPMENT
The sculpture was finished and placed in the prepared container with transparent plastic sheets, gold foil paper, and silver foil paper. All of these are intended to be for the injection of glue.
